A Morning in the Garden

There’s something special about watching curiosity come to life in real time.

This month, we spent a morning with a local preschool, gathering in the garden to talk about where our food comes from, fruits, vegetables, and the simple magic of growing something from the soil. But the real stars of the day weren’t just the strawberries or herbs… They were the tiny, living helpers beneath our feet and among the leaves.

Together, we introduced two garden essentials: worms and ladybugs.

With little hands gently placing them into the garden beds, the children helped release these tiny creatures into their new home—learning that a thriving garden isn’t just planted, it’s supported.

It was a reminder that even the smallest additions can make the biggest difference.

A Simple Way to Bring Your Garden to Life

May is the perfect time to do a ladybug release of your own.

As temperatures warm and gardens begin to flourish, introducing beneficial insects can naturally support your plants—no sprays, no fuss, just working with nature.

Whether you have a backyard garden or a few pots on a patio, it’s a small ritual that connects you back to the rhythm of the season.

Garden Helpers: Quick Facts

Ladybugs

  • A single ladybug can eat up to 50 aphids a day
  • They help protect roses, vegetables, and fruit trees naturally
  • Best released in the early evening near plants that need support

Worms

  • Earthworms improve soil by aerating and enriching it
  • Their castings (yes, worm compost!) are one of the best natural fertilizers
  • Healthy soil with worms = stronger, more productive plants

A Small Act, A Lasting Impact

What we loved most about that morning wasn’t just the lesson—it was the connection.

To the soil.
To the food.
To understand that growing something… whether it’s a tomato plant or a community takes care, patience, and a little help along the way.

This season, consider adding something small to your garden.
You might be surprised by how much grows from it!
