A Day at Givens Organic Farm: Walking the Fields with John & Jennifer
There’s something grounding about standing where your food is grown—feeling the soil underfoot, hearing the stories behind each crop, and learning directly from the people who tend the land.
Recently, we spent a beautiful day at Givens Organic Farm, walking the fields with farmer John Givens and Jennifer McColm. The tour offered a behind-the-scenes look at organic farming in practice: how crops are cared for season by season, why soil health matters, and what it truly takes to grow food with integrity.
As John shared his knowledge, it became clear that this farm is built on patience, consistency, and respect for the land, values that have guided the Givens family for decades. From observing how crops are grown to learning how thoughtful stewardship shapes both flavor and nutrition, the tour reminded us that organic farming is as much about listening as it is about planting.
These moments of walking, talking, learning are at the heart of why farmers markets matter. They create space for connection between farmers and community, offering transparency, trust, and a deeper appreciation for where our food comes from.
We’re honored to share highlights from this visit and invite you to watch the short video below, capturing a glimpse of the day and the wisdom John brings to the fields he’s cared for over a lifetime.
