Sowing the Seeds of Abundance: Meet Our Local Seed Vendor

April is a fine time to prepare for a season of abundant growth, and what better way to begin than with high-quality seeds rooted in care and sustainability? This month, we’re thrilled to feature a new vendor whose passion for seeds and homegrown abundance aligns perfectly with the heart of our farmers market community, meet Ella of Chacon Seeds!

Nestled in the San Fernando Valley, this vendor hand-packs every seed with intention, offering a collection of open-pollinated, non-GMO, organic seeds for flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Whether you’re dreaming of a backyard bursting with vibrant blooms, a fragrant herb garden, or a bountiful vegetable harvest, these thoughtfully sourced seeds are the perfect start.

Chacon Seeds was born out of love for our little family! In early 2023 My husband Henry and I started to grow herbs and vegetables in the little space we had available to us, utilizing pots, reusing containers, and filling in spaces where dust used to collect. Our son was only around a year old at the time, and seemed to take so well to gardening and handling seeds, so we started collecting more and more varieties. But, with our limited space, we realized the traditional packets of 200-500 seed count wasn’t working for us. We looked for an option to buy 20, 50, or 100 seeds a pack but never found any companies offering them. Also, certain varieties and less common herbs that we were curious about were only available in bulk. This, plus my long standing desire to have a small business for myself led us to start Chacon Seeds. With my husbands prior knowledge of plants and farming from his upbringing in the countryside of El Salvador and my love for organic and unique flower and herb gardens we went on to launch Chacon Seeds in late 2023. Our dream had always been to sell at farmers markets, so being a part of the Sherman Oaks market is such a great pleasure! We vow to only sell organic, open pollinated, and non GMO seeds to our customers, and to offer small hand-packed batches of the best quality. Our seeds are sourced from select organic west coast farms and all of our business is conducted in the San Fernando Valley.

Now is the ideal time to begin starting your seedlings indoors or directly sowing hardy crops like spinach, carrots, and radishes. And with a bit of planning, you can maximize your garden’s health and yield through companion planting. Pairing peas with carrots, for instance, not only improves soil aeration but also enriches the soil with nitrogen, benefiting root crops.

For those embracing a homestead-style approach, consider the natural power of chicken manure compost. If you have backyard chickens, their manure can provide an extra nutrient boost, turning your soil into a rich foundation for a thriving garden.

By choosing locally sourced, organic seeds, you’re not just growing food—you’re cultivating a deeper connection to the land, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring your garden is filled with robust, flavorful produce. Visit our Ella of Chacon Seeds this month and start your journey toward a flourishing home garden!
